Chopin's early 'Lento con gran espressione' is also known as the Nocturne No. 20, Op. Posth. It was composed around 1830 and exists in several different versions.
The Erard piano in this recording was built in Paris in 1864. It is the same model that Liszt purchased one year later. Chopin was very fond of Erards and often performed and taught on them.This instrument was exported to Sydney in the 1860s and sold by the Paling company. It was restored recently in Perth by Colin van der Lecq.
