Chronic pain – From feeling paralyzed by pain to a 110 km hike

Disclaimer: Chronic pain is a very personal and emotional topic. Many feel the need to share their "selfhelp" experience. But even it is it out of the best intentions—please keep in mind that not everyone is looking for this kind of advice, or that in some cases, it can even be harmful. I personally am not looking for any of it at the moment. I am just done with that. I shared this video purely to make sense of future videos and put some of my statements into the context of my whole chronic pain experience. I felt like it was the right thing to let you guys in on my journey here.

Why I am sharing this

It's important to me to share my whole chronic pain story because it has impacted so much (even the fact that I created a YouTube channel itself!) over the last years. It is also the reason I got back into hiking.

Secondly, I wanted to put some of my coming videos in a better context. I want you guys to understand why hiking has become so important to me... My hiking videos are not the main content of this channel, and probably most people don't even know why I share this content. To me, it is my way back to normal life, and those videos are MY favorites. They are the worst clicked videos, but to me THESE are my most important videos, hehe...

Chronic pain & yoga

I have totally different experiences with this. With my knee, yoga helped me a great deal with regaining my range of motion from 90 degrees to FULL range. However, with my feet, it didn't do much for me. (Please watch the video for more details and don't just make assumptions!)

Yoga will always be a part of my life and will always be part of my recovery regimen. I need it to come down after a long day, to keep my stress levels low(ish) and to maintain a healthy level of flexibility. But it is not the solution for everything and anything. (I am saying this as a yoga teacher in training, so trust me, I had my fair share of intensive research at this point)...

How I overcame my chronic pain even though I am not painfree

I am not 100% painfree. And I believe that the pain will always be there. But it is different now, because I regained control over my life. This sounds so dull and stereotypical. I hope that it becomes more understandable through the video, because it is the truth. It's what I experienced.

What I did is basically the opposite of what was recommended to me. "Don't overdo it, try to find rest." I tossed that thought and started climing mountains again, against all odds. This was what helped me. Not the fifteenth doctor to suggest surgery as a last resort. Hiking, that was my last resort. Moving instead of being afraid to move.

This video is NOT:

– a substitute for seeing a professional
– a model solution
– all there is to this story in all the detail
– telling you all about me (Ask, don't assume!)
