Tarikh Episode 682

In this episode Nikhil talks about Chunar Garh Fort, an imposing fortress perched atop a rugged hill overlooking the Ganges River in Uttar Pradesh, India. The fort boasts a rich and storied history that spans centuries. While its exact origins are shrouded in antiquity, references to the fort can be found in ancient Hindu scriptures, indicating its significance even in ancient times.
The fort's prominence increased during the medieval period when it came under the control of the local Rajput rulers. Positioned strategically along the trade routes of the Gangetic plains, Chunar Garh served as a key military outpost and a symbol of power for its rulers. Its strategic importance was further solidified in the 14th century when it fell under the rule of the Sharqi Sultanate of Jaunpur, marking the beginning of Muslim influence in the region.
However, it was during the reign of Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century that Chunar Garh Fort witnessed one of its most notable chapters. Sher Shah, the Afghan emperor who rose to power, recognized the strategic significance of Chunar and launched a determined campaign to capture it. After a prolonged siege in 1532, Sher Shah emerged victorious, adding the fort to his burgeoning empire. Under his rule, the fort underwent further enhancements, including the construction of a grand mosque within its precincts.
Following Sher Shah's demise, Chunar Garh Fort passed into the hands of the mighty Mughal Empire, which continued to reinforce its defences and utilise it as a military stronghold. Throughout the centuries that followed, the fort saw numerous skirmishes and changes in ownership as various regional powers vied for control.
