“나는 자연을 잊어본 적이 없어요. 추상이라는 게 별 게 아니에요. 추상은 학문에서 별도로 독립되어 있지만, 회화는요. 추상이든 아니든, 하나부터 열까지 돌고 도는 둥그런 윤회같이 전부 연관되어 있어요. 우리가 시각적으로 생각하면서 ‘글쎄 이게 뭔가’하고 의식 속에서 느끼는 거죠.

흐름은 가로도 세로도 있어요. 이 작품은 하나의 평면성이거든. 평면 위에 나타내는 요철, 움직임 이러한 것들을 화면에 담고자 한 거예요. 평면으로부터 시작되어 평면으로 끝난다, 나의 작품은. 드러내고 또 메우고, 드러내고 메우고 되풀이해요. 무한히, 끝없이 반복해요. 다섯 번 해서 끝난다, 세 번에 끝난다, 열 번에 끝난다 하는 정도는 그 화면, 평면을 다루는 작가가 생각하고 있는 것에 따른 거다. 그 조절, 그게 호흡이야 작가의 호흡. 말하자면 메우고 드러내고 메우고 드러내는 반복이 하나의 평면성이 된다. 조각 조각이 모여서 하나의 평면이 됐다. (내 작품에는) 얼굴도 없고 꽃잎도 없고 아무것도 없어요. 바보스러운 일이 되풀이되는 거다. 그러한 어떤 의미의 철학성.

산다는 게 간단한 일이 아니잖아요. 예술도 그와 같아요. 우리가 어렵게 살아가듯이 예술도 어렵게 탄생되는 거다. 그 사람이 살았다는 결과가 어떻게 살아왔나가 매우 중요하듯이, 그림도 이와 똑같다고 생각해요. 그 생명력이라는 것은 작품 속에도 있어요. 그러한 의미에서 우리는 예술의 큰 가치관을 존경하는 거죠.

“I have never forgotten nature. Abstraction does not mean much. Although abstraction is a separate and independent field of academia, it is not the case for painting. Whether it is abstract or not, everything is interconnected like a circular cycle. It is something that we think about visually and wonder what it is in our consciousness.

Flow exists both horizontally and vertically. This artwork has a sense of flatness. I wanted to capture the elements and movements appearing on the plane. My work starts from the plane and ends on the plane—it is about the journey from the plane. Peeling off and filling in, peeling off and filling in—this process repeats infinitely and endlessly. Whether it ends after five, three, or ten repetitions depends on the artist working on the canvas and the plane. That control is the breath, the artist's breath. Simply put, the repeated process of peeling off and filling in becomes a form of flatness. Pieces come together to form a single plane. [My work] has no face, no flower petals, nothing. It is the repetitive nature of something simple. A kind of philosophy in that sense.

Life is not always easy to live, and it is the same with art. Just as we go through difficult times, art is also born out of difficulties. Just as the outcome of a person's life and how each of us has lived through is very important, a painting is the same way. That life force, that vitality, also exists in the artwork. The great value of art is that we honor it in that sense.
