Citizenship Application: Changes Age Limit

Follow
Immigration Law Firm оf Mаtthеw Jеffеrу

Mathew Jeffery, a Canadian immigration lawyer, discusses the recent changes to the age limit in Citizenship applications. After meeting the residency requirements and other criteria, Canadian permanent residents can apply for citizenship. Other criteria used by the immigration authorities to qualify applicants for citizenship include passing a test for language proficiency and knowledge of Canada. Previously, applicants between the ages of 14 and 64 were required to pass these tests. However, the government made changes to the age limit as of June 2017 to between the age of 18 and 54. This means that applicants who are below 18 or older than 54 are not required to pass the knowledge of Canada and language proficiency tests in order to qualify for citizenship status. These changes will help people who have immigrated to Canada such as children who have not yet learned the language as well as seniors who are unable to learn.
