While these engines are indeed controversial due to their massculling of classic British diesel and electric traction during the early 2000s, in reality the Class 59s, and their later brethren the Class 66s, represent a highly optimised railfreight operation with a technologically advanced, modular and wellperforming design that is able to find employment on all manner of tasks, leading to the success of these machines not only in the UK, but across the world.
