Classroom Management Strategies: How To Take Control Of Noisy Students Fast (PART 1 of 3)

An international conference on "Maximum Achievement and Character Formation" organized by CATALYST for Professional Development Services on July 22, 2013 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Philippines

Dr. Fred Jones, author of "Effective Teaching", is the world's number one authority on classroom motivation.

In this video, Dr. Jones discusses his experience with classroom management and the valuable lessons he learned from observing highly successful teachers. He emphasizes the importance of efficient management programs that do not consume too much time, as teachers already work twice as hard as anyone appreciates and have limited time. Dr. Jones shares a story about a private school where all the students had been kicked out of the Los Angeles Unified School District. He observed two classrooms, one chaotic and the other orderly, and noticed that the successful teachers had warm and enjoyable relationships with their students. He also realized that the students were doing most of the work, leading him to conclude that teachers must have high expectations and values. However, when Dr. Jones asked the teachers for specific methods, they struggled to provide clear answers. He suggests that the skills of classroom management are similar to parenting, but on a group basis. The speaker discusses the skills and behaviors of natural teachers compared to other teachers who struggle with classroom management. One key difference is their ability to minimize behavioral problems in the classroom. The speaker explains that 80% of goofing off or fooling around in the classroom is a result of students talking to their neighbors, leading to lost learning time and increased stress for teachers. Teacher proximity is also highlighted as an important factor in managing student behavior. Natural teachers spend less time at the front of the classroom and more time among the students, reducing the likelihood of disruptive behavior. The concept of "working the crowd" is introduced, where teachers actively engage with students and move among them to maintain control and create a productive learning environment. The video emphasizes the need for teachers to work the crowd rather than allowing the crowd to control the classroom. Discipline management is discussed, with a focus on prevention rather than relying solely on consequences. The speaker suggests constantly moving around the classroom to check on students' progress and understanding, preventing misbehavior and creating a positive learning environment. The drawbacks of consequences for discipline management are highlighted as they can be timeconsuming and exhausting for teachers. The importance of arranging the classroom in a way that allows for easy mobility is emphasized, with the suggestion of creating boulevards instead of aisles to maximize space and prevent disruptions.
