On formal occasions, adult male citizens could wear a woolen toga, draped over their tunic, and married citizen women wore a woolen mantle, known as a palla, over a stola, a simple, longsleeved, voluminous garment that modestly hung to cover the feet. Clothing was also used to indicate social status and occupation, with senators and magistrates wearing distinctive garments. Wealthy women wore a wide variety of jewelry including earrings, necklaces, tiaras, and bracelets, while men usually only wore rings.
