Welcome to Episode 27 of my Thru Hike of the Colorado Trail.

In this video I hike from Molas Lake Campground to some random flat spot over 26 miles away! It wasn’t my original intention to hike a marathon, but at some point during the day, I realized that this would be my last opportunity during this hike to reach that goal. Dreams do come true. Except when you’re exhausted and just want it to be over.

During the course of the day I just walk and walk. I stop for water and snacks and make some commentary about the local environment.

You may wonder if Steamboat is just on another one of his ‘rantinducing’ kicks, but I wasn’t. This really was one of the most remarkable days that I spent on trail. After taking a day and a half to recast outside Silverton, the consensus among many of the thru hikers was, its almost over and that’s totally ok.

This reality is a big draw for many people to the Colorado Trail. At 485 miles, it hits a sweet spot between enjoyment and misery. You warm up, get comfortable, hit a stride, right before the daily grind sets in and you really have too start digging deep.

So for this day, I pushed as far as was reasonable to make it that much closer to Durango, and the southern terminus of the Colorado Trail.
