A colostomy is an operation that creates an opening for the colon, or large intestine, through the abdomen. A colostomy may be temporary or permanent. It is an opening in the belly (abdominal wall) that's made during surgery.
It's usually needed because a problem is causing the colon to not work properly, or disease is affecting a part of the colon and it needs to be removed.

An ileostomy is a stoma constructed by bringing the end or loop of the small intestine out onto the surface of the skin or the surgical procedure which creates this opening. Intestinal waste passes out of the ileostomy and is collected in an external ostomy system which is placed next to the opening.

The major difference between a colostomy and an ileostomy is that colostomy is done in the small intestine & ileostomy is done in the large intestine. When you do a colostomy, it results in a semisolid form of stool whereas in ileostomy it produces a liquid form of stool. There are more chances of dehydration in ileostomy than in a colostomy.

There is no leakage in the bag or itching in the colostomy process but in an ileostomy, there are higher chances of leakage and itching. Also, there are more complications in colostomy procedures than in ileostomy.
