Combining watercolor marbling with traditional watercolor technique

Some highlights from the creation of a "hybrid" marble/watercolor painting. I dropped thinned watercolor paint onto a tray containing water thickened with carrageenan, then raked this into a leaf pattern. I had previously masked off the areas not to be marbled (i.e., the overlapping outlines of a butterfly and postit) using drafting tape on a small piece of watercolor paper, then coated the unmasked areas of this paper with an aluminum sulfate solution, and allowed this to dry completely. Now I placed this prepared sheet facedown on the surface of the solution in the tray to pick up the marble pattern. After carefully rinsing off the carrageenan residue and allowing the whole thing to dry, I removed the masking and used traditional watercolor techniques to paint the foreground areas. Finally the edge masking is removed, and the result is a hybrid painting, a marriage of two different techniques, but all done with transparent watercolor on Arches 300lb. hot press paper.
