Sabie, Mpumalanga is well known for its picturesque views, holiday vibe, mountain bike mecca and friendly people.
While Sabie is now known for one of the largest manmade forests in the world, this town did not originate due to forestry. The town had many settlers during the years since the 1820’s there have been various communities like the Swazi’s, Zulu’s and Shangaan tribes. The name of the town originated from these tribes, they called it “uluSaba” which translates to “the river of fear” due to the fact that the Sabie River was always crawling with crocodiles. Therefore, Sabie is an adaption from uluSaba. Also known as “place of the rising sun”.

Anyone who has loaded a mountain bike onto their car and headed out to Sabie in Mpumalanga has more than likely aimed their tyres down a trail built by Dennis Lawrie. From the mid 90’s national crosscountry scene to the emergence of marathon racing, Dennis was the guy out with his team burning brush cutter petrol and nailing up bridges.
