Common Tree Snake (Dendrelaphis punctulata)

The Common Tree Snake (Dendrelaphis punctulata) is also known as the Green Tree Snake or Golden Tree Snake in different parts of its range through northern and eastern Australia. It is perfectly adapted to a life in the trees with a long slender body, ridges on either side of its belly to aid it in getting a good grip, and excellent eyesight for hunting frogs and lizards during the daytime. The snake is completely harmless, so with no way of killing its prey before eating them, it simply eats them alive; frogs usually squeal in protest all the way down!

This video captures an aspect of it's climbing behaviour that I had not observed before; to overcome a long distance between branches, the snake extends itself forward using considerable strength, arches it's body up, and throws the front part of its body forward at the branch. If anyone has observed this in other climbing snakes I would be interested to know.

Keep an eye out for the extended version soon!
