Cons of Winter on the Big Island

Follow
365 Hawaii

There are some things that happen on the Big Island that make winter here a bit of challenge for visitors AND residents. Between the constant National Weather Service alerts for high surf, wind advisories and beach closures, we have our issues!
In Kailua Kona, high surf means bad snorkeling, as the water is churned up. It also means dangerous beach conditions, so no swimming. Add to that, the sand disappearing from some of the local beaches, and there is less real estate to dig your umbrella in and set up your chairs.
Oh, did we mention the traffic? But not ALL is bad here, of course! We have our warmer than Minnesota weather and our better than Alaska ocean temps!
We know it's really not all THAT bad here in winter, but some heads up for folks who are visiting.
