Could the assassination attempt help Trump win the election? | LBC callers

James O'Brien heard from callers after the attempt on the life of the former president.

00:00 Caller Scott is 'worried' that the shooting will swing votes in favour of Trump, from voters who do not like him now. He feels this will happen in a similar way to the UK election, where a proportion of the electorate claimed to dislike Keir Starmer, but voted for Labour in an 'antiConservative' move.

03:29 Caller Paige, an American, feels differently. She says Trump is 'like Marmite you either hate him or love him'. Paige feels voters won't be swung so much from their original positions by the assassination attempt. She adds that the 2024 election is not a vote for Trump or Biden, but a vote for 'democracy or authoritarianism'.

James O'Brien then said we have 'no clue' about what the longterm implications of the events in Pennsylvania will be, as he 'wrongly' assumed the Capitol riots in 2022 would have been a 'gamechanger' for politics, and that Trump was left 'untouched and untarnished' despite his association with it.

06:52 Caller Khalid, whose wife is American, feels that Trump is 'a cult leader' and that people 'follow him blindly, no matter what'. He feels this is the reason why the January 6th Capitol riots did not impact the expresident's reputation among his loyal supporters.

09:39 Caller Alan feels that the media are to blame for their coverage of US politics, adding he feels that there are 'commentators sowing seeds of doubt into your logic'. He thinks that some news organisations portrayed the January 6 riots in particular as 'not that bad'.
