On Wednesday, March 22nd from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM EDT, the CSIS Economics Program and Freeman Chair in China Studies are hosting an event to discuss how the United States and its partners should respond to Chinese economic coercion. The event will feature the rollout of a major report on the topic from the CSIS Economics Program. 

As China has grown economically, so too has its propensity to engage in acts of economic coercion against both its neighbors and more distant countries. Past examples of Chinese economic coercion include China's weaponization of its market to inflict pain on the Australian coal industry, Philippine banana growers, and Korean department stores in China. Although often failing to achieve Beijing's tactical or strategic objectives, these punitive actions harm target countries financially and undermine the rulesbased international order. The event will bring together a panel of experts from the United States and partner countries to explore the most feasible and effective ways to jointly address this issue.

The event will feature taped remarks from United States Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel.
