This video talks you through the steps to create a density map with a hexagonal grid in QGIS all you need is a layer showing the outline of the area you're looking at and one with point measurements you want to use to create your density map.

The video covers the steps of creating a hexagonal grid using free tools in QGIS, calculating the point density within each hexagon and visualising the final layer.

You can use the same technique to create density maps with any kind of areas, but personally I think hexagonal grids give it a nice, modern look compared to, say, a traditional rectangular grid. Plus QGIS provides all the tools you need for free!
