Umi Asaka was born into activism. Both she and her mother Yuho have the genetic condition Brittle Bone Disease and faced significant discrimination in Japan. As a child, Yuho was subjected to medical experimentation. As an adult, she battles for the rights of those with a disability and has tried to make sure Umi has more opportunities.
Following in her mother’s activist footsteps, Umi is now finishing a degree in social work at the University of Otago. She is passionate about improving the rights of society’s most vulnerable, and is working to create change for young people and those with disabilities. With lived experience of disability and strong beliefs in social justice, she is driven and inspired to make an impact on the world.
