Creepy BBC Anti-Piracy screen!

this is rare footage of a digital anti piracy system for British home video recorders that came out around 1993. it was a part of a new technology that allowed multimedia menus on tapes where you could jump to deleted scenes or different chapters on the push of a button. it also came with a very nasty anti piracy system. all vcrs sold after 93 were all required to have the circuitry to read special digital signals that were picked up by an extra head on the helical scan cylinder. this digital track contained necessary data to decode the scrambled luminence and chroma data on the tape, it would also compare the media it was recorded on to see if it has been copied to a tape. this means that all vcrs built before 93 could not read these tapes. that along with the fact that the vcrs themselves were designed to hypnotize you into turning yourself in after detecting an illegitimate copy created a big anti consumerism stir and it was discontinued in 94. only 12 official tapes were brought out on the modified format. the video shown here is an early tape of mr blobby
