Growing up in Hawthorne, California, the son of immigrant Mexican parents, Cuco’s upbringing comprised a rich blend of heritage and tradition, complemented by a kaleidoscopic view into the epicenter of contemporary culture, thanks to Los Angeles being just a short jog away. As compulsory childhood piano lessons gave way to learning the guitar, bass, and drums, with high school band adding the trumpet and French horn to the mix, his multiinstrumental oeuvre would quickly flourish as selftaught DAW work allowed him to bridge worlds of sound, culture, and style in ways that would integrate these seemingly disparate scenes. This would lead him to an immensely innovative, highly successful foray into bilingual bedroom pop, traversing territories equally steeped in the aesthetics of lofi synths and modern psychedelia, as well as the old Boleros and iconic Chicano rap of artists like MC Magic, resulting in a distinct fusion that transcends literal and metaphorical borders of sound, style, and language. We recently caught up with Cuco to talk all things artistry, influence, gear, and discovering creative identity. Check it out!
