Dacia Duster 3 - Offroad Fail or Pass?

We are pleased to be able to do our first investigation of Dasia Duster 3, as you probably know we wanted to be the last who review the new car. This is not a full Trails community style investigation but it is nevertheless useful for us to finally see the engine behavior and the car capability in medium offroad top risk scenario. This being said, lets dive in. This is an area where we test AT tires and we particularly know this ramp by heart as it behaves with multiple cars in different scenarios. In this case we have a very dry surface of grass and dust. It’s a distinctive summer surface with some dust slippage and no sand or rocks. The only extra traction is given by the grass, but that too will degrade after each pass. Because the surface is hard and dry the cars need to have good friction grip as the soil bite is limited. Due to the fact that both cars use street tire air pressure of 2.3 Bar, this increases the difficulty for the tires to maximum. Being able to start from a steep ramp incline is important for an offroad car, especially those SUV like and without low dedicated gears. Such a test is basically a safety test in case you get stuck in the mountains as you climb and going down in reverse is a high risk in case you have a long way down. The car can loose front tires grip, will slide to the side and can start to roll over. Most of the offroad accidents with fatalities are because of this fail and this is why we conduct this test and why it must not fail, as for us it would be a showstopper. As you can see the Dasia Duster 3 is capable to do the climb while moving very easily and its start from a holding position is also possible, even though you need to work for it as a driver. Remember that in such highrisk scenarios is better for all your passengers to disembark if in a real mountain climb. Going back to the car, even if Duster 3 has a small gasoline engine and a more average torque, its addon electrical engine helps the car not to stall and as you can see, it makes the car capable to climb. Its not an easy one but, the driver alone should be able to always do it around 70% of the time and if the inertia is maintained from the bottom up, then the car will climb on 30 degrees slopes 99.9% of the times. Therefore, if you own a Duster 3 and Plan accordingly, know your terrain surfaces and understand the future challenges of the route, if you reduce the tire pressure to max 1.8 Bar and if you analyze the terrain and carefully choose the trail line to travel in order to avoid later obstacles then you protect the vehicle in subsequent stages of the difficult zones. We have concluded that we have no showstoppers and you should be able to do soft and medium offroad with Duster 3. From what we noticed the Duster 3 is a high clearance car even from the factory, higher than older Dusters and has very good angles of attack. Yes, the driver visibility is poorer than on older models, but you can manage with good planning and more road terrain analysis stops. Duster 3 should be able to get you from A to B in offroad on most trails even if you will work a bit harder at the steering wheel and use your brain more than any other driver from other 4x4 cars, still, offroading is an experience that has different levels and satisfactions for each car type and driver. We will not go into more details now, we will not discuss the pricing, we would only definitively say that Duster 3 can do offroad and that its engine can handle it up to a medium difficulty level. We can say that the 1.2 engine capability wise, is somewhere between the 1.6 and 1.3 gasoline older Duster 3 engines and this is due to that electrical motor support. Now considering the improved sound proofing, aerodynamics, fuel economy and accordance newer pollution norms, the Duster 3 is not a bad car by no means. How good it is for it price, well that remains to be seen. We let the images speak for themselves and also please note that we do not yet communityvalidate the new car as our access to a test car is limited for testing, so it might take a while until we have a full picture. Therefore setback, relax and enjoy the rest of the video raw, for your own conclusions.
