Dangerously Close! F4 Phantoms Air support in the Vietnam War. Close air support (CAS) sometimes called tactical air support gave American and South Vietnamese ground forces a massive military advantage. However, the U.S. Air Force had to relearn tactics used during World War II and the Korean War. The challenge was to provide effective support with highspeed combat jets, and to control many airstrikes over a small area. After all, the "close" in close air support really indicated striking the enemy dangerously close to their own troops!
