When Daniel was just a few months old, he was diagnosed with WiskottAldrich syndrome – the same diagnosis as Anthony Nolan, 50 years earlier. The only way to save him was a stem cell transplant – just like Anthony.

“In our darkest days, we genuinely didn’t think Daniel would pull through. A little innocent child, who was born with a horrible disease, it’s just not fair.” – Georgie, Daniel’s mum.

But thanks to the legacy Shirley Nolan created in her son Anthony’s name, we were able to find a stem cell donor for Daniel, and he’s now a healthy young boy who loves the outdoors.

As we reflect on Shirley’s legacy, Georgie shares her hopes for the future: “I hope that everyone who needs a transplant can get one. And I hope that one day, the treatment is a lot kinder for them.”

Over the last 50 years, we’ve developed a worldleading stem cell register with over 900,000 potential stem cell donors. We now help four people every single day – people just like Daniel.

We’re making good progress, yet still too many people are dying from blood cancer and blood disorders or living with the effects of treatment. We know we’ve got more work to do.

By uniting people and science, we want to build a fairer future where everyone can expect effective treatment and a positive outcome, just like Daniel.
