Data Visualization vs Geographic Information Systems

I have been pondering, what really is the difference between Data Viz and GIS? Does GIS fall under Data Science or Geography? Or Both?

I sought out the definitions from the top software companies for data visualization, Tableau, and geographic information systems, Esri, to see if I could clear this up.

Tableau defines Data Viz as follows:
“Data visualization is the graphical representation of information and data. By using visual elements like charts, graphs, and maps, data visualization tools provide an accessible way to see and understand trends, outliers, and patterns in data.” Tableau Website

Esri defines GIS as follows:
“A geographic information system (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. Rooted in the science of geography, GIS integrates many types of data. It analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes. With this unique capability, GIS reveals deeper insights into data, such as patterns, relationships, and situations—helping users make smarter decisions.” Esri Website

They are very similar but come from different perspectives. I want to know what you think about this.
