During the Cold War, military aircraft of the opposing blocks would often meet over the Iron Curtain, the border between Western and Communist countries of Europe. Such encounters usually ended without real combat. But in March 1953, after the death of Joseph Stalin, the West expected the Communist forces to show more aggression, so as to not appear weakened by the event.
Two Czechoslovakian MiG15s with Lt Jaroslav Šramek as the leader took off in order to practice air combat between themselves near the border with West Germany. American early warning radars detected them and scrambled two F84 Thunderjets to intercept them, expecting the MiGs to violate German airspace. The flight leader was Lt Warren Brown, a pilot with a recent combat experience in Korea. Soon he would find himself in a difficult position with a pair of hostile, aggressive aircraft having the upper hand.
