Immediately after graduating from Georgia Tech in 1942, Floyd Blair enlisted in the U.S. Army and eventually served as a P47 fighter pilot in the 404th Fighter Group.

Blair flew support missions for ground troops on Omaha and Utah beaches on DDay and had a bird'seye view of the carnage taking place on the beaches below.

Afterwards Blair flew missions supporting U.S. troops advancing across Europe and would earn the Distinguished Flying Cross. Of Floyd Blair, his captain said, ''Blair was in all respects, the most accomplished fighter pilot that I have had the fortune to fly with. I can say this without equivocation after 30 years of military flying...It was always reassuring to be able to see Floyd on my wing as a firstclass protector and mentor. I used to say to myself, "I'm glad that Blair was there”.'
