Rob A. Gentile is the son of Italian immigrants. His father worked in a steel mill, so Gentile grew up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. Gentile has spent his career as a sales engineer in the steel industry, while married to his wife, Melanie, for more than 30 years. Together, they have devoted themselves to his specialneeds daughter, Maria, who is in her 20s, and whom Rob calls a "pure spirit."

Throughout his childhood, he struggled with difficult questions about prayer and why children must suffer. The answers came suddenly and unexpectedly: at age 56 he had a massive heart attack, then ran out of vital signs and had a neardeath experience (NDE). Personal discovery and spiritual awakening continued while he waited to receive a heart transplant.
