This organic chemistry video tutorial provides the equation needed to calculate the degree of unsaturation also known as the index of hydrogen deficiency from a chemical formula. It also provides a simple way of determining the IHD value just by looking at the chemical structure. A ring has a IHD value of 1, a double bond found in alkenes has a value of 1 and triple bonds found in alkynes have a value of 2. Alkenes and Alkynes are unsaturated compounds. The same is true for cycloalkanes. Alkanes are fully saturated and have an IHD value of 0. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems.
