Delta Flight 2406
December 19, 2017
ATLVPS
MD88 Registration N908DL
Seat 24A

Go around at VPS (Eglin AFB or Ft Walton Beach/Destin) due to heavy fog. It was a last minute go around just before touchdown, as some people said they saw the runway lights last second. I didn't because I was over the wing in the exit row. Was an awesome rush and kinda crazy looking outside also!
A pilot was sitting next to me so we talked a little about it. I asked him since it's ILS approach why can't they just land, but he told me the pilot must be able to see the runway lights at about 500 feet out, and if not must do a go around in fog. It was extremely heavy fog this day.. The autopilot will only get you so far he said.

Pilot up front came on the intercom and told us he will check with dispatch what to do and get back to us. About 5 minutes later he said he will try one more approach, but if he misses it we would have to fly back to Atlanta for the night. I'm glad we made it!

Was my first go around in over 40 flights in my lifetime so it was pretty awesome. Felt the plane push you straight back in the seat and right back into the sky. Seeing all the fog and having 0 visibility was quite an experience, but fun. Other people were a bit more nervous lol.

Couple pictures at the end, one of the fog I took, and the other one as I was boarding the flight

Edit didn't realize this would be my last md88 flight :( now that delta retired them earlier than expected due to covid19, I no longer have the chance to fly on this magnificent plane. The 717 just doesn't feel or sound the same.
