In this brief lecture I have discussed about the desirable properties of an Ideal Local Anesthetic.
Anesthesia is generally describe as the loss of sensation in a person's body.
There are two basic types of anesthesia, the local anesthesia and the general anesthesia.
Local anesthesia is defined as the loss of sensation in a circumscribed area of the body without producing the loss of consciousness, while general anesthesia is defined as the general loss of sensation, with loss of consciousness.
The agents that produce the effect of local anesthesia are known as local anesthetics, while those that produce the effect of general anesthesia are known as general anesthetics.
So there are a few desirable properties that a local anesthetic should ideally have in order to be used in clinical situations.
There are in total 10 desirable properties of a local anesthetic agent, and in this video I have briefly discussed them one by one.
However, an ideal local anesthetic that has all of the 10 qualities doesn't exit as of now, but most local anesthetics do meet most of the points discussed. And maybe in the future we might even have one local anesthetic agent that can produce the effect of local anesthesia, along with carrying all of the desirable properties.
