Destiny 2's Lore and Story from the Final Shape reveals what The Witness was doing to the Traveller while we were trying to get inside. The Traveller was screaming according to Immaru and thanks to the new Mataiodoxia Exotic, we have lore that tells us how the Witness made it scream like this. It was carving away the Traveller's flesh and bone to create the Final Shape.
