#Vitreous embryology and anomalies

The embryology of the vitreous is often overlooked.Embryologically, the vitreous humor originates primarily from the mesenchyme of the optic cup and the neural crest cells. As the eye develops, these cells undergo complex differentiation and organization to form the gellike substance known as the vitreous humor. This process involves the secretion of various extracellular matrix components, such as collagen fibrils and hyaluronic acid, which give the vitreous its unique properties of transparency and gellike consistency.
The vitreous is not immune to anomalies and developmental disorders. Anomalies in vitreous embryology can lead to a spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from benign to visionthreatening conditions. These anomalies may include persistent fetal vasculature (PFV), also known as persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV), where remnants of the fetal vasculature fail to regress properly, causing tractional forces on the retina and potential vision loss.
