Dew Point And Relative Humidity Explained - [Metar and Flight Ops Considerations]

In order to understand what the Dew Point is we need to talk about Relative Humidity.

By definition, Relative Humidity is the amount of water vapour in a specific parcel of air relative to the water vapour that this parcel of air can hold.

You can think of a parcel of air like a glass of water.

A glass of water that is empty has zero water vapour inside, and, a glass of water that is half full means that has 50 per cent of water vapour in it.

This percentage is Relative Humidity.

If you change the Temperature or the quantity of the Water Vapour that is present in a specific parcel of air you will alter its relative humidity.

Increasing the temperature of air mass (at constant water vapour) the relative humidity will decrease, and, if you decrease the temperature the relative humidity will increase.

Since the relative humidity increases when the temperature of the air mass goes down there will a point at which the parcel of air will reach 100 per cent of relative humidity.

If you measure the temperature of the airmass when it has 100 per cent relative humidity you will get the Dew Point temperature.

When the Dew Point is reached, the parcel of air won't be capable to hold any other water vapour, and, if we decrease the temperature (or increase the water vapour) the air mass will start the condensation process.

During Flight Operations you must pay extra attention when you have already marginal visibility and the temperature and dew point are close.
