Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip (UK VHS 2001)

Back to the Past!

Here’s something new I might try out on weekends. Seeing as I’m all out of recordable Cartoon Network UK tapes – unless someone wants to kindly donate some – might as well post some of the official ones you could buy instead. Not that there are that many, but to start off, here’s the UK trailer reel of the Dexter’s Laboratory movie Ego Trip, which is a pretty rare VHS, but I bought it from the local video shop when it was new over 20 years ago, so it’s just second nature to me.

Nothing too special on the tape trailerwise, anyway, other than the obligatory Harry Potter plug, which you could never really escape from during this time. In fact, this trailer is probably the first I’d ever heard of the franchise, and I thought the story was about a kid who catches some letters in a living room and somehow goes to wizard school. Fiveyearold logic for you, I guess.

The BBFC then pop up in one of their VSC warnings that appeared on just about every VHS in existence around this time, meaning that every word this woman speaks is pretty much burned into my head for the rest of eternity. “Thanks for listening,” she says. Feels like I’ve been listening for my whole life, honestly.

After that, though, in order to pad out the running time – because despite being a “movie”, Ego Trip is only about an hour long – we get four classic Dexter’s Lab cartoons from the first season. (Or “Bonus Toons”, as they’re called on the back of the cover.) Why did they pick these four episodes especially? There’s only one answer, and that’s “omelet du fromage”.

But there’s no time for you to correct me on that, because the movie’s on, and the rest is mere legal nonsense.
