Medellin liegt in der Provinz Antioquia im Valle de Aburrà, ein etwa 60km langes und 610 km breites Tal im Westen der Zentralkordillere, das sich in über 1500m Höhe ausbreitet.
Medellin ist unmittelbar verbunden mit Namen wie Kolumbiens Drogenkönig Pablo Escobar, dem CaliKartell, den Guerillas FARC und ELN. Einst die gefährlichste Stadt der Welt, hat sich das Image die letzten Jahre gewandelt und 2013 wurde Medellin vom WallstreetJournal sogar zur „innovativsten Stadt der Welt“ gewählt. Abseits des Marketings wirft man dem städtischen Sekretariat für Sicherheit allerdings vor, bei Auftragsmorden wegzuschauen und den kriminellen Gangs freie Bahn bei der Eintreibung von Schutzgeldern zu gewähren, wenn diese dafür die Finger von den Touristen lassen. Wir hatten mit Claudia eine einheimische Stadtführerin dabei und haben Viertel besucht, die sie in ihrer Kindheit nicht besuchen konnte. Man sieht heute Fußgängerbrücken zwischen Wohnvierteln, wo einst Kriege zwischen den Gangs Grenzen zogen.
In der dunkelsten Ära der 1980er Jahre war eine der hellsten Entscheidungen getroffen worden, der Bau einer Metrobahn. 1984 wurden deutsche und spanische Firmen mit dem Bau des Hochbahnsystems mit 1500V Gleichstrom beauftragt und am 30. November1995 fand schließlich die Jungfernfahrt statt. Der Ausbau der Metro mit einem Seilbahnnetz in die Armenviertel wurde zum Schlüsselereignis. Die Viertel mit Seilbahnen wurden danach meßbar friedlicher.
In der schicken Metrobahn oder in einer der fast 400 Gondeln der Metrocable erlebt man, wie ein gutes Nahverkehrsnetz die Lebensqualität der Bevölkerung verbessern kann.

Medellin is directly linked to names such as Colombia's drug king Pablo Escobar, the Cali cartel, the FARC and ELN guerrillas. Once the most dangerous city in the world, the image has changed in recent years and in 2013 Medellin was even voted “most innovative city in the world” by the Wall Street Journal. Aside from marketing, however, the city's security secretariat is accused of turning a blind eye to contract killings and giving criminal gangs free rein to collect protection money if they keep their hands off tourists. We had a local city guide, Claudia, with us and visited neighborhoods that she wasn't able to visit as a child. Today you can see pedestrian bridges between residential areas where wars between gangs once drew boundaries.
In the darkest era of the 1980s, one of the brightest decisions was made: the construction of a metro railway. In 1984, German and Spanish companies were commissioned to build the elevated railway system with 1500V direct current and the maiden voyage finally took place on November 30, 1995. The expansion of the metro with a cable car network into the slums became a key event. The neighborhoods with cable cars became measurably more peaceful afterward.
