Study Options in New Zealand after bachelors for International Students

If you are an applicant who has done his bachelor's and is looking forward to study in New Zealand, then there are many study options for you. Graduate diploma and postgraduate diploma are two of the options from many options.

Graduate Diploma vs Postgraduate Diploma NZ: Program Level

The difference between these two qualifications is in terms of the level of qualifications in New Zealand. The qualifications are divided into ten levels of the New Zealand Qualification Framework (NZQF).

A graduate diploma is at level 7 of the New Zealand Qualification Framework whereas a postgraduate diploma is at level 8 of the New Zealand Qualification Framework. So a postgraduate diploma is at a higher level than a graduate diploma which is at level seven. This is the difference in terms of the level of qualification.

The duration of the courses is about one year. So whether you choose to do a graduate diploma, the duration is one year and most of the postgraduate diplomas are also one year in duration.

Graduate and PG Diploma in New Zealand IELTS Requirements

The second difference is in terms of the English language requirements. To get admission into a graduate diploma, the students need to have an IELTS band score of overall 6 with no band less than 5.5 in any of the four modules, whereas, for a postgraduate diploma, the English language requirement is of IELTS overall 6.5 with no band less than 6 in any of the four modules.

Applicants must note that the English language requirements may be higher for certain courses, if you wish to do a graduate diploma in teaching, it is at level 7 of the New Zealand Qualification Framework but the English language requirement is of IELTS 7 in each of the four modules. So the applicants are encouraged to check the exact English language requirements of the course.

Graduate and PG Diploma in New Zealand Post Study Work Visa

The third difference is in terms of the poststudy work visa. If you would like to avail a poststudy work visa after successful completion of your course in New Zealand, then you must choose your course carefully. If you choose to do a graduate diploma which is at level 7 of NZQF, then you would be eligible for a poststudy work visa, only if the course falls in the green list. If the graduate diploma does not feature in the green list of New Zealand, then you would not be eligible for a poststudy work visa. But if you choose to do a postgraduate diploma, then all of the postgraduate diplomas are eligible for a poststudy work visa equal to the duration of the course.

If you choose to do a PG diploma in management and the duration of the course is one year. As the course is at level 8 of the New Zealand Qualification Framework you would be eligible for a poststudy work visa of one year.
