Different Beginnings An Inside View of the NICU | Isis Parenting 2014

Part of the Isis Parenting Expert Speaker Webinar Series
Featuring: Mary Coughlin, RN, MS, NNP and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU, is a busy and intimidating place. New parents, still recovering from a sudden or complicated birth or infant diagnosis, may be pushed into this unfamiliar territory, with a whole new language and culture to learn. Even in situations where a possible NICU stay was anticipated, the reality of leaving their vulnerable baby in the NICU while being discharged home, is distressing to the new family.

Parents, relatives, caregivers, birth or parenting educators and interested others can attend this webinar to learn more about daily life in the NICU. We'll review the various roles of the many NICU staff members and share some common terms, equipment and procedures that parents might encounter during their baby's NICU stay.

We'll discuss a variety of ways that parents can be empowered to connect with their hospitalized baby and build confidence in their parenting skills. We'll also share tips on how to remain informed and effectively communicate with the baby's medical team. In addition, we'll explore the roller coaster of emotions often experienced by NICU parents, and share coping strategies, resources and supports that can help when a baby is in the NICU.
Join us for a Behind the Scenes View of the NICU, presented in conjunction with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), a nationally ranked Level 3 NICU with 77 beds.
