Different "Inline Engine" Configurations Explained | [I2 to I8]

Introduction:
The straight or inline engine is an internal combustion engine with all cylinders aligned in one row and having no offset. In this engine construction, the cylinders are placed in a straight line. The inline engine can have up to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 cylinders.

Inline engines are smaller in overall physical dimensions than designs such as the radial and can be mounted in any direction. These engines are very common in vehicles with an engine capacity of up to 3 liters. Although, the manufacturers term an inline engine with four cylinders as an Inline4 engine. They usually denote it by I4 or L4 in a car’s nomenclature.

1) StraightTwin Engine: A straighttwin engine, also known as an inlinetwin, verticaltwin, or paralleltwin, is a twocylinder piston engine with cylinders arranged in a line along with a common crankshaft.

2) Straight3 Engine: A straightthree engine (also called an inlinetriple or inlinethree) is a threecylinder piston engine where cylinders are arranged in a line along with a common crankshaft.

3) Straight4 engine: An inlinefour cylinder (also known as an I4 or straightfour) engine is a very popular choice for today’s economy vehicles as the simple design allows for both efficiency and perfect primary balance. In an I4 engine, all 4 cylinders are mounted in a straight line along with a single crankshaft and oriented in an inclined or vertical plane

4) Straight5 Engine: The straightfive or inlinefive engine is an IC engine with five cylinders aligned in one row, sharing a singleengine block and crankcase. The justification for a fivecylinder engine is that it is compact as an inlinefour and almost as smooth as a straightsix engine.

5) Straight6 Engine: The straightsix engine (also referred to as an inlinesix engine; abbreviated I6 or L6) is an internal combustion engine with six cylinders mounted in a straight line along the crankcase with all the pistons driving a common crankshaft (straight engine).

6) Straight8 Engines: The straighteight engine or inlineeight engine (often abbreviated as I8 or L8) is an eightcylinder internal combustion engine with all eight cylinders mounted in a straight line along the crankcase.
