Life out West with cowboys and Indians is what young Richie Caldwell is expecting when he leaves Chicago in the early 1900s to visit his uncle in the small town of Big Sun. His dreams abruptly end when he learns that civilization has changed the West from the tales he was fond of reading. He's also shocked to find his Uncle Lester's "ranch" to be a rundown shack and equally disreputable farm.
