DIY How to make a Ball Bearing Model using marbles and bottle lids

Have you ever seen any comparison between bar stools, lazy Susans, and the fidget spinner? They all are capable of rotating freely. Ball Bearings is the common mechanism in all of them. For something that rotates or spins, ball bearings are important.

This is a great STEM project for kids learn about ball bearings and physics concepts by making your own model! You'll need some simple supplies like marbles and bottle lids of varying sizes. This is a fun and easy way to learn something new, so be sure to check it out!

The Science Behind It

A ball bearing is a friction reducing mechanism made up of a ringshaped track of freely rotating hard steel balls. The ball's sphere shape reduces surface contact and friction while keeping the moving parts apart. The marbles in our ball bearing model serve as steel balls in the bearings. By having smooth marble balls and a smooth inner and outer surface for the balls to roll on, the friction between the surfaces is greatly reduced.
