Reference:
Tank (eng. Tank) armored combat vehicle, most often tracked, usually with cannon and additional machinegun armament, usually in a rotating fullrevolving turret, intended mainly for direct fire.

In the early stages of the development of tank building, tanks were sometimes produced with exclusively machinegun armament, and after World War II, experiments were carried out to create tanks with rocket armament as the main one. Known variants of tanks with flamethrower weapons. The definition of a tank as a combat vehicle was different in different armies, since their purpose and methods of use changed in different eras.

The main difference between a modern tank and other combat vehicles with cannon armament is the ability to quickly transfer fire over a wide range of horizontal angles. In the overwhelming majority, this opportunity is realized by installing the cannon in a fully revolving turret. There are a few exceptions though. A selfpropelled artillery unit (ACS) may be structurally similar to a tank, but it is designed to solve other problems: the destruction of enemy tanks from ambushes or fire support of troops from a closed firing position, therefore, it has some differences, first of all, it concerns the superiority of the ACS firepower over protection ...

The division of combat vehicles of tank forces into tanks and "specialized combat vehicles" arose due to the need to separate the latter into special units in accordance with military doctrine. For example, during the Second World War, the American army used the doctrine of General McNair, which entrusted the fight against enemy tanks on "tank destroyers" (M10 Wolverine, M18 Hellcat, etc.), as they call combat vehicles, structurally similar to light or medium tanks with effective antitank weapons, while the tanks themselves were intended to support the infantry in battle. In Soviet literature, the same vehicles were called antitank selfpropelled guns.

KV2 Soviet heavy assault tank of the initial period of the Great Patriotic War. The abbreviation KV means "Kliment Voroshilov" the official name of the serial Soviet heavy tanks of 19391943 production, named after the hero of the Civil War in Russia, military and political figure Voroshilov Kliment Efremovich. It was originally called "KV with a large tower".

This vehicle was developed by the design bureau of the Leningrad Kirov Plant (LKZ) in January 1940 in connection with the urgent need of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army (RKKA) in a wellprotected tank with powerful weapons to fight the fortifications of the Mannerheim Line during the SovietFinnish War of 1939— 1940's
