DNA results of an Afrikaner Boer

Follow

I did my DNA test through "Family Tree DNA". My YDNA Haplogroup is R1b (M173) and my mtDNA Haplogroup H. Your DNA does not define you for who you are as a person. Your upbringing, your culture and your faith define`s a person. BUT your DNA tells you where your genes came from. It is a nice to know... Was I surprised with my results??? Not really, but there were small surprises...

I am a 10th generation Afrikaner and my family farm this southern tip of Africa for the last 340 years... My 6th great grandfather Pieter Swart was farming in the Overberg region almost 80 years before the first Xhosa tribe under chief Rarabe invaded and crossed the Fish river into the Cape colony, almost a 1000 km to our east. The first Xhosa border war started shortly thereafter.

Haters of the Afrikaner Boer people always tagged the Boers as a bunch of mixed people, well DNA results show that we are indeed mixed. Mixed in a European gene pool... it looks that in some cases the Boer people are more European than Europeans!!! Incredible by knowing that most of our forefathers came to Southern Africa between 1652 1800. Prof Heese calculated that by 1800 there where a bit more German blood flowing in the Afrikaner, followed closely by Dutch and lesser extend French and a little bit of Scandinavian. By 1820 the British settlers arrived and added some Scottish and Irish blood into the Afrikaner population.
