Not all training providers mislead you just most of them! There are some people out there who will tell you the truth but never listen to exaggerated claims of how much a driving instructor earns.

The vast majority of driving instructors in the UK will never earn more than £20,000 to £25,000 after expenses. Some will but that's only because they're working long hours. The figures don't lie. You can't be charging £40 an hour and be earning £40,000 a year working 20 hours a week it just doesn't add up!

Yes, £40 times 20 hours a week is £800 a week. Yes, £800 a week times 50 weeks of the year is £40,000 but that's before you've paid for your car, fuel, added in travelling time, advertising. If you work more hours to make more money you'll then have higher expenses.

Think going solo is the answer? You'll need to be way above average to be charging £40 an hour and be booked for months without a school behind you. The very nature of average being average means most won't be above average...or it wouldn't be average! And if you do have a school behind you then you'll have franchise costs, introductory offers and other things costing you.

Working as a driving instructor is not the wellpaid job many pretend it is and I know from having done it for over 20 years.

Yes, it can be fun and enjoyable. I'm not saying it's a bad job but most driving instructors by far do not earn the high amounts of money that many schools claim. That's just to sell you a training course.
