Do I Have Oculomotor Dysfunction? | Oculomotor Dysfunction Tests

Jason Williams DC Chiropractic and Rehab

If you suspect you may have ocular motor dysfunction AKA oculomotor dysfunction or apraxia, I'll show you an exam I do in my office and answer your questions "Do I have ocular motor dysfunction?" Testing for oculomotor dysfunction is the first step in determining if an issue with the ocular nerve could be causing issues, specifically oculomotor headaches. I'll show four tests, including the Gaze Stability Test, Smooth Pursuit Test, Saccade Reflex Test, and Head and Neck Reflex Test. You can try these four oculomotor dysfunction exam tests at home, and if they're positive, it should give you some more information for seeking care.

I also show you ocular motor dysfunction training exercises in another video linked at the end of this one. I typically do these tests in patients who are having headaches after a head or neck injury. Oculomotor dysfunction often shows up after these. The most common time I see oculomotor dysfunction is following a motor vehicle accident.

Keep in mind that there are TONS of causes of headaches and many varieties of headaches. If you're looking to overcome headaches caused by ocular motor dysfunction, then you can try the exercises in another video on our ‪@JasonWilliamsDCChiroRehab‬ channel. If your headaches aren't caused by oculomotor dysfunction then I'd suggest seeing a medical professional to figure out exactly where they're coming from. Chiropractors, especially Primary Spine Practioner (PSP) chiropractors are a great provider to see for headaches since they can diagnose and treat most headaches. If your headache isn't something we can treat, we'll refer you to a neurologist who may be able to help.
