Do PRP Injections Wear Off

Follow
Drew Timmermans, ND, RMSK

PRP (PlateletRich Plasma) and stem cell therapy treatments offer a promising approach for chronic pain and injury recovery, not by simply "wearing off" but by potentially providing longlasting effects. These therapies work on a cellular level to promote healing and reduce inflammation, with outcomes varying among individuals based on various factors, including the nature of their injuries and their body's response to treatment.

The misconception that these therapies might wear off stems from the recurrence of pain in some patients after treatment. However, this is often due to new injuries or continued degeneration of the treated area, not the failure of the therapy itself. The body's healing process is complex, and while PRP and stem cell treatments can significantly reduce pain and aid recovery, they do not make the treated tissues invulnerable to future damage or wear and tear.

For instance, my personal journey with back pain and various treatments, including PRP and stem cell injections, highlights this perspective. Despite achieving significant pain relief and improved functionality, subsequent injuries and accidents led to recurring pain, necessitating further treatments. Each treatment provided substantial relief, demonstrating the therapies' effectiveness in managing pain and aiding recovery, rather than wearing off in the traditional sense.

It's important to understand that healing from such therapies is not always perfect. Scar tissue and changes in tissue structure can occur, potentially leading to different stress patterns in the area. This doesn't mean the treatments wear off; rather, the body's ongoing response to physical stresses and subsequent injuries can lead to new or recurring pain.

Emerging research and patient registries show that PRP and stem cell therapies can offer lasting pain relief for many years, contrasting with temporary solutions like steroid injections, whose effects diminish over time. This distinction is crucial for patients considering these treatments, emphasizing the need for informed decisionmaking based on a thorough understanding of the therapies' potential longterm benefits and limitations.
