People often ask which blood pressure reading is more important? The top one systolic or the bottom one diastolic. In this video we have a quick look at what they mean and which one would be more concerning if they were raised.

Your blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and is given as two figures:

systolic pressure – the pressure when your heart pushes blood out / when the heart is pumping (this is usually the first and higher number)

diastolic pressure – the pressure when your heart rests between beats / when the heart relaxes (this is the second number and lower one)

As doctors we know that people can have different types of high blood pressure (hypertension); for some, it may mean only their bottom number is consistently raised. For others, it means their systolic blood pressure is always raised. We'll look at what the studies show about your risk and what other factors can increase your chance of a heart attack or stroke.
