Does Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Lead To Hip And Knee Pain?

Follow
El Paso Manual Physical Therapy

Spinal stenosis in the lower back affects the nerves that run down the legs into the hips and knees.

It is common for people to have pain, numbness, achiness, and tingling into the legs as a result of the lumbar spinal stenosis.

In our clinic, we see people with stenosis develop knee pain and hip pain as a result of the stenosis problem. It might be referred nerve pain because of pinched nerves OR it could be the leg muscles not working properly causing the hip and knee joints to be affected. It could also be both situations happing at the same time.

Either way, this situation is frustrating for people because now they might have a back problem, knee problem, and hip problem :(

The good news is that nearly all cases of lumbar spinal stenosis get better naturally without surgery. That means the hip and knee pain can clear up as long as it hasn’t been there long enough to cause permanent changes in the joints.
