For eighteen long years Mother Gothel had imprisoned Rapunzel in isolation within a tower and had planned to keep that hold over her for all her days ruining her life to keep herself alive. Gothel was willing to do whatever it took to get the princess away and extend her time, and I think that may have included giving up a child.
