A common complaint among scoliosis patients is feeling tired. There is not a lot of research focused on fatigue and scoliosis, but in years of practice, I have noticed a correlation between scoliosis and the energy levels of my patients.

Scoliosis implies an unnatural curvature of the spine of 10 degrees or more. It is often associated with a loss of the normal curvature of the spines on the side. When this happens, patients' bodies are left to deal with the consequences of an asymmetrical spine.

The spine's natural curves make it stronger to gravitational forces. These curves act as a natural shockabsorbing system, making the spine more flexible, allowing it to deal with daily stressors.

Common signs of scoliosis we can see are postural changes, such as uneven shoulders and hips. In adults, the most common sign is pain, especially a dull ache in the lower back that becomes increasingly worse throughout their day.

If the spine is not aligned, it becomes inefficient, making it unable to deal with gravitational forces, causing the muscles to contract more and struggle to stabilize the body, which creates fatigue in patients constantly.

Scoliosis patients also struggle with balance and are not as coordinated, making them more prone to injuries, which also adds to the reduced energy levels they experience.

The factors that will determine how tired a scoliosis patient can get are:

1. The curve's size, and based on that alone, scoliosis can impact cardiovascular, lung, and digestive functions. Since the body is working harder in all these areas, these add to the fatigue level of the patient.

2. The condition of scoliosis, like a neuromuscular condition affecting the body's tissues, can lead to tiredness.

3. Patient age is another factor. There is a gap between 20 and 40 where it is easier for people to adapt to scoliosis. As these patients get older, scoliosis weights them down, and they can experience increased fatigue.

4. Low sleep quality is another factor, especially in adults where scoliosis causes pain. After a long day of work, when patients go to bed, they feel the weight of the long day of activities, and compression starts to set down in the body, leading to lower back pain.

5. Lastly, postural changes are a factor in decreased energy levels. Patients struggle more trying to sleep because they can't find a comfortable position and do not rest most nights. The asymmetry in their ribs, pelvis, shoulders; create pressure points that most patients don't have, and due to all of these, patients don't have restorative sleep.

Every case is unique, and regardless of the symptoms, the best approach is always to address the cause of the scoliosis. And to do that, patients must reduce their scoliosis, manage the curve's progression and manage the curve for life to avoid fatigue and other problems that come from untreated scoliosis.
