Most drummers think about muffling in terms of the amount but this completely ignores the fact that there are actually two entirely different TYPES of muffling; restrictive and mass loading. We’ll demonstrate the opposite effects as well as the similarities and help you decide what the right approach is for desired sonic effect.

UPDATE: Unfortunately we didn’t see this one coming but it seems that a lot of people are watching this and thinking that internal mufflers are the only forms of restrictive muffling that’s not the case though. Anything that’s able to press against the drumhead with more than the force of gravity is a restrictive muffling method. Felt strips, drum clips, active gate mufflers are all forms of restrictive muffling.
